5 Signs Your Nervous System Needs a Reset

There's a particular kind of tired that sleep doesn't fix.

You know the one. You rest, you go through the motions, you get things done — but something underneath is still running at full capacity. A low hum of tension that never quite turns off. A reactivity that surprises even you. A flatness where curiosity or joy used to live.

What most people call burnout, depletion, or stress, I often recognize as something more specific: a nervous system that has been in survival mode for so long it's forgotten what settled feels like.

Here are five signs yours might be asking for a reset.

1. You're tired but you can't fully rest

You fall asleep fine but wake at 3am with your mind already running. Or you rest all weekend but still feel like you're dragging on Monday. Or you crave downtime but find that when you actually have it, you can't seem to land in it — you're restless, you pick up your phone, you find something to do.

This is a nervous system that's stuck in a higher gear than it needs to be. It doesn't know how to downshift because it's been in motion for so long. Rest becomes a skill it has to relearn.

2. Small things are landing harder than they should

When the nervous system is dysregulated, the threshold for what feels manageable drops significantly. A slightly sharp email feels like a personal attack. A small change in plans feels destabilizing. You snap at someone you love over something that wouldn't normally register.
